ZAPRAF – the Association for the Protection, Collection and Distribution of Phonogram Producers’ Rights – is the only organization for the protection and collection of phonogram producers’ rights in the territory of the Republic of Croatia.
In keeping with the Copyright and Related Rights Act, ZAPRAF operates on the basis of the latest Decision of Croatia’s State Intellectual Property Office, of 30 January 2006 (Class: UP/I -034-03/2000-020/0004), powers of attorney received from Croatian and foreign record producers, and bilateral agreements with foreign phonogram producers’ collective organizations.
In this context, it is important to mention international treaties and conventions acceded to and ratified by the Republic of Croatia (the Berne Convention, Rome Convention, Universal Convention, Phonogram Convention, Satellite Convention, TRIPS Agreement, WCT and WPPT treaties), which form the basis of the overall global, and also Croatian, system of collective protection of rights.
ZAPRAF – the Association for the Protection, Collection and Distribution of Phonogram Producers’ Rights – is a voluntary, non-profit, nongovernmental organization which, in keeping with the relevant legislation, promotes the interests of record producers (phonogram producers), and the interests of the Croatian discographic and music industry in general.
The Association was founded in 1995 as the Croatian Phonographic Association. Following a decision adopted by the General Assembly in July 2004, the association changed its name to the Association for the Protection, Collection and Distribution of Phonogram Producers’ Rights (ZAPRAF), and limited its activities solely to collecting and distributing remuneration for the use of phonogram producers’ rights. At the same time, a new Croatian Phonographic Association was established. It specializes in professional issues pertaining to record producing, anti-piracy, discographic awards etc.
ZAPRAF currently brings together 189 providers of power of attorney, among which there are both Croatian and foreign record produces.
As a collective organization, ZAPRAF adheres fully to the strict standards contained in the Code of Conduct for Music Licensing Companies. It has been invited and received for membership of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
